Reading Notes: Mahabharata Part D

During the great battle, Arjuna defeats Bhishma who laid in a pool of arrows until the end of the battle, at which he perished. Drona pledges to take Yudhishthir captive, but his armies are thwarted by Arjuna. Arjuna's son was killed in battle, and Arjuna was very distraught.  The next day he had the most fearsome battle yet and killed many warriors, including his son's killer. Unfortunately, that did not stop Bhima's son's death next.

The Pandavas take a weird turn and use deceit to kill their previous guru, Drona.  Karna takes over the opposing army afterward, but Bhima kills Duhshasana who put Drupaudi to shame.  He did so in style, drinking his blood and everything! Arjuna also finally kills Karna in a fit of rage after hearing his son's voice. This leaves Duryodhana as the main target.

Duryodhana knows the battle is lost but knows he will be shown no mercy, so he wants the war to play out.  There were still some harsh feelings about the way the Pandavas killed Drona though, and there were plans made by Ashwatthaman to killed them in their sleep. Duryodhana died a happy death, knowing that many of the Pandava children were killed.

Draupadi, on the other hand, was pretty messed up. She lost five sons and a brother after all. She sent Arjuna seeking for revenge.  They didn't want to kill Ashwatthaman and be punished, so they stole his favorite thing instead, a jewel.

Bhima, who had been lying on the battlefield for quite some time, waited for the solstice and a grand ritual for his funeral.  After the war was an odd time, Parikshit was born with a miraculous birth, then King Yudhishthira does a horse sacrifice ritual to signify his rule of the kingdom.
