Week 5 Story: Earl Loses His Inheritance

Bob loved his trailer and even more, his trailer park, Sunnyvale Heights, which he had lived and overseen for the last twenty years.  Throughout his years, he had seen many tenants come and go, but he loved a tenant named Earl the most because he reminded him of himself. Earl had lived peacefully in the park for the last 14 years, and took good care of his plot and had a good relationship with the other tenants.

Bob was sad because his wife had convinced them to sell their trailer and retire to a condo in Florida. He really loved Sunnyvale Heights. He was happy though that he had such a noble tenant to handle his overseeing duties, and that was, of course, Earl.

Bob told Earl of their plans, and although Earl was deeply saddened to hear that Bob was going to leave, he was happy to take over the responsibility of overseeing the cleanliness and order of the park in which he had lived for so long.

When Bob told his wife his plan to let Earl take over his job, she shrilled loudly.  "But I already promised Barb that her son Jed could take over your duties!" she exclaimed.  Early scrunched his face, he knew Jed was a lazy bum and would do a terrible job.  On the other hand, he knew that his wife would go absolutely nuts if she had to go back on her promise.

Bob couldn't figure out how to tell Earl the bad news and felt especially ashamed that it was Jed who would take Earl's responsibilities at the park.  He knew Earl would be a fantastic tenant at any park and Jed would never appreciate that, so he came up with a plan.

The next day, Bob went over to Earl's house and his plan began to unfold.  He told Earl that Jed's mother had complained that Earl had taken a pee off his back porch, in plain sight of his neighbors.  Earl was surprised at this claim and said he didn't remember doing that.  "Well you must have been drunk then Earl, and that doesn't make it any better.  We're gonna have to ask you to leave the park."

Earl was shaken.  He was extremely upset at the situation, but respected Bob's decision.  He packed up his things and moved his trailer to a new park in the town over.  And that is where he resided for the next 14 years...

Author's Note

This is an adaptation from the Ramayana, where Rama goes from inheriting the crown of the king to being exiled for 14 years.  I grew up around trailer parks and small towns and have always enjoyed sitcoms (My Name is Earl, Trailer Park Boys, etc) about the culture, and this was an attempt to adapt an Indian epic story to this setting.  All of the characters and setting names are made up by me and have no relation to characters from other trailer park sitcoms, but in this adaptation, Earl is Rama, and Bob his Rama's father who had to exile him.

  1. Hey Mason I'm going to give Feedback using the TAG Method

I loved the setting of the trailer park because I used to love the show trailer park boys. I think the trailer park is a great setting because anything could go on in a trailer park.

Did you ever consider maybe going into more detail about the park. Like how many residents lived there or any more background information.

One suggestion I can make is extending the ending a little bit more. I feel like the story is cut off a little too quickly. Other than that I loved your story!

  2. Hi Mason! I wanna first say that you are a great storyteller! I've read a couple of your stories, and like the other ones, this one is also so creative! I actually didn't even know that it was an adaptation from the Ramayana. I love the modern twist you put in it, it makes it much more relational! Great Job overall!! You're humor is you're biggest strength in writing!!
